Research at DIII-D

The DIII-D National Fusion Facility provides a platform for experimental investigation to confidently project solutions to future commercial devices. At the heart of the facility, the DIII-D tokamak offers unique advantages to the research community. Our facility accelerates fusion progress across device designs, with notable flexibility to rapidly pioneer innovative solutions and world-leading measurement and investigative capabilities to support on-going and future research efforts. Capabilities are regularly expanded and improved to ensure that our program continues to answer the most burning questions for fusion commercialization.

Research Planning

The mission of the DIII-D research program is to pioneer the plasma solutions, technologies, scientific basis and operational approach, and to enable the development of the people needed to make fusion energy a reality. Primary research selections are set by the DOE Fusion Energy Sciences (FES) Tokamak Research programRun time is allotted based on double-blinded peer review of project proposals that fit current research priorities.

Research Division Organization and Goals

The FES Tokamak Research program is divided into five major topical areasThe organization of the research structure can be seen below. The major topical areas are indicated in the gray boxes. Our Contact Form enables you to directly message the leaders of these major topical areas.

Join us for our annual public tours of DIII-D during Fusion Energy Week (May 4-10)! We look forward to seeing you in-person or virtually.
