Review Process for Research Products

Document Number D3D-G04 Rev. A Date Released 11/20/23ย

This guidance document is intended to provide DIII-D Users with the information necessary to process research products through the facilityโ€™s review process.

Issues surrounding the creation and dissemination of DIII-D research products are incredibly important to the functioning of the program. DIII-D operates as a User Facility within the U.S. Department of Energy, Office of Science, and is therefore expected to produce high-quality research products of meaningful impact toward advancing fusion science and technology and the development of fusion energy. In addition, the program is subject to requirements for reporting all research products that are output.ย ย

Mini-proposal and Experiment Execution

Document Number D3D-G05 Rev. A Date Released 05/31/24ย

The purpose of this guidance document (GD) is to outline the essential activities and resources necessary for session leaders (SL) throughout the lifecycle of an experiment, including the preparation and review of a mini-proposal, the execution of an approved experiment, and the key post-experiment activities that will aid in achieving the experiment success and satisfying the Experimental Campaign goals.ย ย

This document covers the main roles, responsibilities and tools required for session leaders and their run team to effectively manage the preparation, execution, and post-experiment activities; however, every experiment is unique. The session leader must conduct and maintain active discussions during all phases of the cycle with the run team, mentor (when requested by the SL), experiment stakeholders, and subject matter experts to identify additional tasks, resources, requirements, and risks ensuring the success of the experiment.ย ย

Data Management Plan (DMP)ย ย

Document Number D3DG.08 Rev A Date Released 1/30/2024ย

The DIII-D National Fusion Facility is a large international program, with more than 100 participating institutions and a research team of approximately 800. GA operates DIII-D for the Department of Energy, Office of Science, through the Fusion Energy Sciences program. DIII-D is an Office of Science User Facility. As part of DIII-D’s mission, approximately 500 TB of research data has been acquired and/or generated since its inception. Management and access to these data are described below.ย ย

The DIII-D Data Management Plan (DMP) is a critical component of the programโ€™s fundamental research data pipeline, ensuring data standards, validation, security, and integrity. The DMP describes the types of data that are measured or produced through analysis, and it also describes the resources available for the data management and preservation during the course of research operations.ย

Software Maintenance Responsibilities

Document Number D3D-G12 Rev. A Date Released 07/31/2024ย

Software is an essential part of the DIII-D research infrastructure. DIII-D operations, control, and analysis depends on reliable and routine software execution. The requirements, recommendations, and policies within this Guidance Document establish a foundation to ensure that scientific software remains reliable (consistent with equivalent foundations for tokamak systems). By following this GD the DIII-D program is adopting best practices for maintaining software, while managing the constant evolution of research processes.

This document describes the requirements that institutions must meet for supporting software used in the DIIIโ€‘D program. More specifically, it defines who will be responsible for the software and the minimal set of expectations. This applies to all software used in the DIII-D program and a timeline for implementation is proposed in Section 4.2.ย
